Alumina ceramic: an innovative material for high technology
Alumina ceramic is a material with physical and mechanical characteristics that are particularly interesting for the production of high-technology components, used in the medical, semiconductor and measuring machine sectors.
Microplan Group, a leader in metrology and precision engineering, produces special and custom-designed alumina ceramic components at its production sites in Italy and France, with fully customized production.
The entire alumina ceramic production cycle is carried out in-house, from mould production to drilling and milling operations, through to lapping operations.
Alumina ceramic: a technical ceramic for high-technology components
Alumina ceramic is a technical ceramic valued for its high rigidity, low specific weight, hardness, excellent wear resistance and remarkable thermal stability.
Thanks to these properties, alumina ceramic is particularly suitable for the production of ultra-high–precision technical components used in highly specialized technological and industrial sectors.

What alumina ceramic is and how it is made: the material

Alumina ceramic products are obtained starting from aluminium oxide powder (Al₂O₃), with a purity level of 99.8%.
Production follows a complex and articulated process that starts with the creation of a master, namely the reproduction of the object to be obtained.
The mould is created from the master and is then used to cast a slip composed of aluminium oxide powder mixed with chemical binders and distilled water.
After a drying period, the product is removed from the mould: at this stage, the product, which is extremely fragile, is defined as being in the “green” or raw state and prepared for a drying period in a dedicated oven.
Only after these operations is the product placed inside our furnaces for sintering, namely firing at a very high temperature, up to 1700°C, with digitally controlled cycles.
This process transforms the Al₂O₃ powder into a compact ceramic material, characterized above all by extraordinary hardness and rigidity, in addition to the other characteristics that make it unique: high electrical insulation capability, very high resistance to corrosive agents and excellent thermal stability.
Technical properties of alumina ceramic
Alumina ceramic has distinctive technical characteristics:
High hardness
one of the highest among technical ceramics, thanks to its high aluminium oxide content, 99.8%, and high sintering temperature
Wear resistance
ideal for applications subject to sliding and friction, it is known for the extremely long service life of components, even in particularly critical conditions
Low coefficient of thermal expansion
it guarantees dimensional and geometric stability, limiting expansion and deformation
Excellent thermal stability
it ensures that mechanical characteristics are maintained even at very high temperatures
Purity
it is a very pure material that does not introduce contamination into critical processes, even at temperature
Excellent corrosion resistance
it is not affected by most chemical substances
Excellent electrical insulation
perfect for components that must also function as electrical insulators
Good thermal conductivity
it ensures optimal heat dissipation and is among the best within the range of ceramic materials
These characteristics make alumina an ideal material for a wide range of sectors, from precision engineering to industrial electronics.
Industrial applications of alumina ceramic
Thanks to its unique properties, alumina ceramic is used in numerous industrial fields. Some of the main applications are:
Metrology
Measuring instruments and components made of alumina ceramic guarantee maximum accuracy and precision, ensuring constant measurement reliability thanks to high wear resistance and hardness.
Furthermore, thanks to the high rigidity and low weight of alumina ceramic, it is possible to produce instruments and components that are particularly lightweight and practical to handle and use, also benefiting operator Safety
Semiconductor and microelectronics industry
used for the production of components capable of not contaminating typical working environments, cleanrooms, and of guaranteeing maximum performance in difficult conditions of temperature, dynamics and fatigue resistance.
Components for CMM measuring machines
thanks to high rigidity, low weight and low surface roughness, components made of alumina ceramic are ideal for the production of pneumostatic axes, such as the Z-axes of coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), or crossbeams, including large-size ones, where the rigidity and weight of the material become fundamental functional characteristics.
Medical industry
alumina ceramic is used for the production of components requiring high thermal stability combined with geometric and dimensional accuracy.
Research
Thanks to its multiple and excellent physical and mechanical characteristics, alumina ceramic is an irreplaceable material for certain projects in the field of research
